Day 17: Happiness is a Practice, Not a Destination

Managing Yourself

If you are like me you have a "to-do" list a mile long. Many of us wake up early, or go to bed late, just to extend our waking hours. Life is busy!

Until recently I believed the busyness of my life was the problem.  I tried creative ways to manage, rearrange and control external factors. Such as using my magical mental powers to will slow drivers to go faster, clerks to ring my items up in 60 seconds or less, and of course never ever get a red light!

Not only was I busy but my mind was constantly creating stress by racing against time.

Time is finite. There are only 24-hours in a day; I am not going to get more of it. My energy however is renewable. I can replenish it. A life-changer for me to finally realize this and put it into practice.

Yoga teaches us about our Life-Force or Prana. It is what animates us and gives us that twinkle in our eye. It enables vital activities such as digestion, elimination, breathing, circulation and so much more.  When we are chronically stressed we lose Prana and it can make us sick.

Manage yourself wisely: Try some of these tips from both the wisdom traditions and science:

  • Eat healthy plant based whole foods. Add even one meal a day of plant based foods
  • Get rest. Turn your phones and computers off an hour before bed and try to get 8 hours of sleep
  • Meditate. Make a beginning of just 5 minutes and build from there.
  • Take Breaks. Step away from what you are doing and take a walk or take 3 deep breaths
  • Exercise. Walk, yoga, hike, dance, etc... move your body
  • When you are driving to and from work or errands listen to something on the radio that is inspiring and invokes positive emotion. Turn the phone off if you can
  • Live your core values. Do what is meaningful to you!
  • Practice Gratitude
