An Unexpected Path

Last February an unexpected event significantly changed the course of my professional life. As I have learned through my yoga studies Grace herself has two main qualities (different then attributes); one is of a sweet gentle nudge: like that voice you hear "take that class" or "I know I need to set stronger boundaries with my time"; and then there is the more fierce quality that can turn your life upside down. She shakes you and brings about circumstances that can "wake you up" or offer you a "moment of clarity" or "close a door"; which is what happened for me.

A year and a half ago I had much different plans for my professional path AND I am so grateful to be on the path I am now. Since February I have met teachers that have opened my mind to new ways of seeing myself, my life and the world. Teachers that have given me tools and techniques to cope, thrive and flourish in ways I had never known before, and yet build upon the work I had done up to that point. I believe when we are seeking nothing is wasted.

For the past year I have dove deep into the practical yet profound foundational text of Yoga, "The Yoga Sutras' of Patanjali". These 195 aphorisms are a manual for the philosophy of yoga that was created to help people reduce suffering and experience more sustained happiness in daily life. They are meant to be a dialogue between teacher and student, through which they can become life tools. And until I sat regularly with a teacher these could not have come alive for me as they are now. They are to be studied through our experience and not simply academically. If things had only gone according to my plan I may not have met my Sutra teacher and found yet another passion... Positive Psychology.

I am currently pursuing a year long Certificate in Positive Psychology, studying with a leading teacher in the field. Positive Psychology is a scientific field of study that focuses on optimal human functioning-providing skills that cultivate happiness and better living! Sound familiar?

Every day I am fascinated by the parallels between the Yoga Sutras and Positive Psychology. The latter  brings both science and proof to what Yoga has been teaching for 5,000 years.

I am so excited to share what I have been studying, learning and living. As my teacher says, "Happiness is contagious" and the more you share it the more YOU experience it.
