If You Want to Change Your Thinking, Heal Your Heart
Earlier this week I posted this excerpt from Jeff Brown's book, Spiritual Graffiti, on my Facebook and Instagram accounts.
I was blown away by the response from so many. It was eye opening!
Seems many of us relate to the human suffering caused by undigested life experiences and residual emotional states.
Yoga tradition teaches that our monkey mind - through the functions of perception, memory, imagination and reason - is skilled at creating opportunities for us to run from pain and seek out comfort, even when it doesn't benefit our growth or long term happiness.
Pushing our feelings down may offer momentary relief, but in the big picture it will likely just lead to more pain. That's because this emotional material doesn't just go away; it makes itself known through irrational fear, overreactions, resentment, sensitivity, addiction an so on.
The heart needs healing. The mind needs calming. In this state the mind and body feel safe to release these impressions and ultimately we can be set free.
Yoga is a beautiful and profound purification process of mind and body. It's not about getting into a handstand or bending ourselves into pretzels. It's about healing the mind and liberating the heart.
As Jeff so eloquentally writes, "if you want to change your thinking, heal your heart".
