Do You Really Want What You Say You Want?
In the first words of the ancient foundational text of yoga--a book of spiritual psychology--we are told of a place within us that knows no suffering.
Later in that same text we are encouraged to build faith--a very specific faith--one that compels us toward this inner knowing of happiness and wisdom, which can guide us toward our outer goals and inner confidence.
Further on in this "manual for living" we are instructed to live as if that future is true for us right now by taking actions that support such a way of being and living. We are told we must reach for it by aligning our entire self toward it--mind, body, heart and spirit.
How do we do that? Well, it goes on to say that although we first must practice being in touch with that most intimate part of who we are--this inner place of happiness, confidence and wisdom--we must also let go of what is holding us back. We can't swing on a new branch if we are gripping to the old one.
Leonardo Da Vinci said this:, "God, you sell all things to men at the cost of their effort".
So faith in action requires spending daily time in the practice of knowing--being in that place within you--a place you can come to experience but not "see' in the traditional sense.
My teacher once said that our difficulties arise from what we think of ourselves--not from who we are--in the deepest sense.
The Buddha said: "What you think, you become; what you feel you attract; what you believe you create".
If we can't get past our "past" or our "stuff" like fear, self-doubt, anger, resentments and so on, it isn't because we are those things--it's because we think more about those things than reaching and grasping and being with the good (God) within us.
It is so easy for me to fall back into my fears and sit there. But when I allow my fears to remind me to choose to also "see" and experience the joy, confidence and wisdom that is within myself--my entire reality changes.
Do you really want what you say you want? Do you want to experience confidence? Do you want to make a change in your life? Do you want to know more peace?
Whatever your desire, if you really want it, you must sit regularly with the part of you that knows you can--and carry that energy and knowing into your daily actions, choices, thoughts and emotions. As Leonardo Da Vinci said, the cost is our own effort.
