My Story

In my formative years, positive role models were absent from my life. I lacked confidence and esteem. I suffered with constant feelings of overwhelm, confusion and self-doubt.

I suffered with depression, anxiety and by the age of 26 I was diagnosed with PTSD.

I clung desperately to the idea that with the right information I would someday be able to overcome my anxiety and move forward.

I tried eveything to alter my state of mind, including alcohol.

Eventually, I hit rock bottom. I was defeated.

But it was through this bottom that I became exposed to life changing opportunities. I was introduced to mentors, teachers and coaches who taught me that it wasn't just my past or where I came from that was making life difficult for me right now -- it was my thinking and beliefs that were at the heart of my anxiety, fear and suffering.

8 years later I made my way to a yoga class. I heard teachers say things like, "there is more right about you than whatever feels wrong" and "peace of mind is a state of mind, not a goal" and "pain is part of life, but suffering is optional".

Although I didn't yet know how to apply what they were saying, it planted a seed of hope so deep inside me that a huge fire was lit.

I realized any lasting change would have to come from within me -- and the actions I would then take.

Over time and with practice and experience I transformed from a helpless victim to a resilient, confident and resourceful woman. I learned to thrive and reconnect to my inner strength.

Experience has shown me that what I believe influences what I do. Thinking and behavior go hand in hand. Through supportive guidance and accountability, I steadily recreated my life -- from the inside out.

Over Two Decades Later

I am happily married and we are the proud parents to our beautiful son, Jack

Although life is wonderful, it is still a process. Everyday is a mystery, But now I know how to choose my atttitude in any set of circumstances. I know how to get back up when I fall and how to redirect when I miss the mark. Life is not perfect. I am not perfect. I am however, learning every day to be whole.

What I believe

Happiness is not just the absence of misery or adversity; it is ALSO the presence of joy hope and resilience.

Some things aren't easy to walk through. Life can be hard and it's not always fair.

I know, because I have faced a lot of challenges in my own life. But my life has also proven to me that each encounter holds within it an opportunity to grow in understanding and strength.

I believe we are equipped with the capacity to deal with whatever comes our way, but we have to learn how to do that, and very often we need help.

I think as a society we have to let go of the quick-fix mentality and instead learn to tap into our personal power and capacity for change and growth, so we can do what we came here to do... contribute to this beautiful thing called LIFE.

Words of Wisdom From My Teacher

Not everything that happens, happens for the best, but some people make the best of everything that happens.

I used to cringe when people would tell me things happened for the best. Especially when it was something very hurtful or painful. But what my teacher said made good sense.

Everyone in life will face pain. But some people have learned how to make it matter. We don't invite it, but there it is.

So now what? We can learn the skills of optimism, resilience, grit, connection, compassion and yes, even happiness. Because after all, it is a skill, not a place.
