In my formative years positive role models were absent from my life. I lacked confidence and esteem. I suffered with constant feelings of overwhelm, confusion and self-doubt.
I suffered with depression, anxiety and by the age of 26 I was diagnosed with PTSD.
I clung desperately to the idea that with the right information I would someday be able to overcome my anxiety and move forward.
I tried eveything to alter my state of mind, including alcohol. Eventually, I hit rock bottom. I was defeated.
Through this bottom I became exposed to life changing opportunities. I was introduced to mentors, teachers and coaches who taught me that it wasn't just my past or where I came from that was making life difficult for me -- it was my thinking and beliefs that were at the heart of my anxiety, fear and suffering.
I heard my teachers say things like, "there’s more right about you than whatever feels wrong" and "your focus creates your reality” and “pain is part of life, but suffering is optional".
Although I didn't yet know how to apply what they were saying, their words planted a seed of hope deep inside me.
I realized any lasting change would have to come from within me, matched with new unfamiliar actions and choices.
Over time, with practice and experience I transformed from a helpless victim to a resilient, confident and resourceful woman. I learned to thrive and reconnect to my inner strength.
Experience has shown me that what I believe influences what I do. Thinking and behavior go hand in hand. Through supportive guidance and accountability, I steadily recreated my life -- from the inside out.
Over Two Decades Later
Life today is so much more wonderful than it was so many years ago.
I’m happily married and we’re grateful parents to our beautiful son, Jack. I have a thriving Coaching Practice that I’m so proud of and gives me purpose beyond my wildest dreams.
Today I know how to choose my attitude and change my response. I know how to get back up when I fall. I know how to redirect my attention and choices when I miss the mark.
That is powerful because life is not about being perfect. It’s about being whole.
What I believe
Happiness is not just the absence of misery or adversity; it is ALSO the presence of joy, hope and resilience. It’s knowing who we truly are beyond all the labels and diagnosis.
Some things aren't easy to walk through. Life can be hard and not always fair.
I know, because I have faced a lot of challenges in my own life. But my life has also proved that each encounter holds within it an opportunity to grow in understanding and strength.
I believe we are equipped with the capacity to deal with whatever comes our way. But we have to learn how to do that, and very often we need help.
I think as a society we have to let go of the quick-fix mentality and instead learn to tap into our personal power and capacity for change and growth. So we can do what we came here to do which is to enjoy and contribute to this beautiful thing called LIFE.
Words of Wisdom From My Teacher
Not everything that happens, happens for the best, but some people make the best of everything that happens.
I used to cringe when people would tell me things happened for the best. Especially when it was something very hurtful or painful. The truth is we all will face pain.
What I’ve come to know is some people have learned how to make it matter. We don't invite it, but there it is. So now what? We can learn the skills of optimism, resilience, grit, connection, compassion and yes - even joy.
Because after all, happiness is not something we have to find, it’s something we already possess. It’s our nature. It’s the ultimate Truth of who we are.
